Ministry Description |
The First Congregational Church was organized on March 7, 1837 by sixteen people. The present brick edifice was dedicated on February 5, 1862, at the cost of $14,000. This brick sanctuary is the oldest structure in the village still in use for public purposes. Our church was also the home of ministerial pioneers, one of which was L Smith Hobart, ordained here on January 11, 1841. He was called the "Father of Congregationism in Michigan," as he helped found the Olivet Congregational Church, was an organizer of the Michigan Conference and a prime supporter to bring about the founding of the Chicago Theological Seminary. We identify as providing support to the community, reaching out through youth programs and having a robust music ministry via adult and children choirs. We host various organizations within our church walls and organize community activities throughout the year. With our rich history within the village of Union City and the surrounding areas, we look ahead to how we can secure our place within the future. Areas we have identified we would like to grow come from our survey, which includes continuing to increase our involvement in the community, being a community presence by being a place to connect where people can be part of a family of faith. Other areas of concern are an aging congregation resulting in loss of financial support, changes in leadership, and continuing to attract young families. The leader we are seeking needs to be aware of how small communities function and become active in the community beyond the walls of the church. We are looking for someone with a sense of humor who helps us relate the scriptures to our daily lives in sermons, as well as through study.
