Ministry Description |
There is a secret in the quiet, beautiful Liliha area in Honolulu on the island of O’ahu. Although its roots spread out to 110 years, this once well-known church has diminished in numbers, but not spirit. Once known as the home of the “Best Luau in Town,” we are trying to find a new identity with the discontinuation of this event. Our church is United Church of Christ Judd Street, so old, our name predates the denomination. We should charge royalties. Our roots were in Chinatown, where our immigrant forefathers worked and lived. The church was their safe haven, where they could fellowship with their friends and their children could grow and learn the Word of God. In time, our church needed to move, as the area grew unsavory after WWII. We blossomed and prospered in this new place. Throughout, we have had a rich legacy of pastors, who have nurtured us and helped us grow. But our pastor is retiring, after serving us well for 13 years, and we are looking for another. Our numbers have dwindled, but our spirit to serve our congregation and community is strong. Our body is aging, but we enjoy doing hands-on work with the community. We love each other as family and cherish our “boutique church”, but we wish to see our family grow, while maintaining that feel. We are looking for someone who is strong in the Word, but compassionate to work one on one; one who can minister to the elderly, but appeal to the young; one who can help us realize our stewardship theme of IMAGINE 2025 and help us to grow beyond 110 years. Help us to find our direction for the future, even if only for a short time. We are looking for an interim minister at the present, as we need to evaluate who we want to become. Maybe God is calling you to us. Maybe you are looking to only serve as an interim, but who knows? Maybe you will come to want to stay with us and guide us to IMAGINE beyond 2025. |
