Ministry Description |
Scottsdale Congregational UCC has about 100 members and is located near historic Old Town Scottsdale. We are a diverse congregation and have strong lay leadership and many ministries. The church heartily embraces progressive Christianity. We are proud to have become an Open and Affirming church in 1998, welcoming persons of all sexual orientations into the full life and ministry of the congregations. We were also among the first to incorporate popular music, art and a full audio-video experience into Sunday services. We were early adopters of e-mail communications and having a presence on the internet. We launched a weekly smoke- and alcohol-free jazz venue and started a ministry to bring arts to the wider Scottsdale community. We are proud to have pioneered many practices that have become commonplace in many church settings today. The SCUCC community contains a wide range of personality types. Many quickly take charge and have strong opinions, and most will gladly step in when asked. We feel that the Holy Spirit speaks to us all equally, but usually each can understand only part of what God wants of SCUCC. This wide range of personality and strengths has been described alternately as “wild horses” or “a herd of cats.” The last two settled ministers resigned after three and five years of service, respectively, due to conflicts within the congregation. Two moderators also resigned mid-year. We asked the Southwest Conference to conduct a Situational Support Consultation which, among other things, found there was old guard/new guard tension, a loss for the past that hasn’t fully been grieved and processed, and a lack of vision for the future. SCUCC needs an intentional interim pastor with the skill set to help us become a healthier congregation before we call a new settled pastor. |
