Ministry Description |
The First Congregational Church, North Adams (est. 1827), boasts an abundant welcoming spirit. Even during the pandemic, we attracted worshipers. We continue to do so, both through our front door and into our innovative, participatory Zoom services. We seek a 3/4-time Designated Term Pastor who will partner with us as we sustain our vibrancy and prepare to meet our challenges, tasks we have already begun to tackle in a quasi–strategic planning process. A congregation comprised largely of creative, problem-solving professionals, we inhabit a once-thriving mill town reinventing itself as an innovative, arts-based city with opportunities galore. We are all in on mission. Since 1987, Berkshire Food Project has operated out of our assembly hall, serving a total of 85,385 meals in 2023. That year, we quadrupled our own giving (10% of annual) through intentional fundraising. A robust music program (which also involves the community with programs both celebratory and cathartic), periodic potlucks, women’s gatherings, book discussion groups, after-church coffee time, and off-the-cuff meet-ups unite us in fellowship. To sustain our life as a congregation—our central intention—we sold our 10 Tiffany windows and an auxiliary building in 2018, which has provided us with a modest, cushioning endowment. In the future we want to fashion a worship model that fully reflects our abundant spirit and offers flexibility to pastor and congregation alike; realize the potential of our historic property; bolster our community outreach; and offer a space where all comers may feed their spiritual needs and curiosities. The DTP we hope to attract will offer a thoughtful approach to Sunday preaching based in Scripture and touching on issues of peace and justice; will extend pastoral care to the entire congregation, not just the sick and bereaved; and will be willing, indeed eager, to work with our active laity to tackle problems as we mutually invigorate our spirits and renew our energies. |
