Ministry Description |
St. John’s is the spiritual hub of Madeline Island. A community cornerstone, our church serves multiple populations: 425+ year-round citizens, 2500+ seasonal residents, and tens of thousands of one-day summer visitors. St. John’s reaches people far beyond its church walls. We grow, adapt, and evolve with the changing needs of Madeline Island; our community impacts us, and we impact the community. It’s a symbiotic relationship. St. John’s is a unique church on a magnificent island in Lake Superior, nestled among the 21 islands comprising the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. We are people who revere the natural beauty surrounding us; celebrate the intensity of changing seasons; marvel at an eagle’s nest perched high in a pine tree arching over the lake; and gasp at an electric sunset. We are people who honor our diverse ancestors, people who were Anishinaabe elders, missionaries, loggers, fur traders, fishermen, lighthouse keepers, and pioneer farmers. We are people who embrace intellectual challenge. Working, playing, and praying side by side, we are diverse people ranging from those with immense wealth and second homes to people living off the grid and barely scraping by. We are artists, writers, musicians, business leaders, professionals, teachers, entrepreneurs, farmers, tradespeople, and construction workers. |
