Ministry Description |
State Street Church, United Church of Christ, has an intentionally diverse congregation. We have in our active membership people of every walk of life, who live in Portland and surrounding communities. We have embraced asylum seekers from Southern Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo - most of whom experienced trauma in these conflicted areas of Africa. We have professionals in our congregation, teachers, business people, doctors, ministers, lawyers, etc.; as well as the homeless, the poor, those in recovery, and over the years a significant number of parishioners struggling with mental health issues. We also have a significant shut-in population. We are an inner-city church with vulnerable populations all around us and in our congregation. We are also a progressive, supportive faith community, which attracts members from suburbs all around us. Our pastoral needs are likewise diverse. We seek an interim minister who will help us maintain stability and confidence of the congregation throughout transition from our retiring beloved pastor to a new settled pastor. The successful interim pastor will continue to promote love, compassion, hope, forgiveness and respect for our differences; help us to maintain a sense of security, hopefulness and excitement/enthusiasm of members; help everyone to feel that they are heard in our transition and future direction; provide clear and consistent communication regarding where we are in the transition process; and assist members with issues of loss involved in pastoral change. |
