Ministry Description |
Our church’s long and rich history began with the arrival of Missionary Shiro Sokabe and his wife Shika from Japan in 1894. They came to offer spiritual guidance to the Japanese plantation workers living in Honomu. He founded Honomu Christian Church and opened a school and orphanage, providing children with meals, housing, and an education based on the teachings of the Gospel. The ministry under Reverend Sokabe and subsequent pastors expanded to serve many ethnic groups living on the Hamakua Coast. After the passing of Reverend Sokabe, four other local churches merged with the Honomu Christian Church to become the Hilo Coast United Church of Christ. We are former plantation workers, business professionals, students, office workers, farmers, and retirees from many places. We’re proud of our diverse ethnic and multi-cultural congregation, and we are looking for a pastor who is compassionate, a good communicator with all ages, and willing to learn about and be accepting of all of the cultures present in our congregation and our community. The most important goals we envision our next minister achieving, with help from the congregation, include the eventual growth of the congregation by attracting young people and families and having more community involvement. Some of the specific job duties we expect of our new pastor are: Prepare weekly message and coordinate weekly worship service activities with deacons, lay leaders, musicians, and other participants; Provide spiritual support and guidance to members as needed; Provide administrative services; Communicate with and assist Church Council and other committees as needed to conduct church business; Support local ministries and serve as contact for community service organizations; Support and encourage members to increase their knowledge and abilities to serve the church effectively as workers and leaders. Applicant must possess a degree in Divinity from an accredited theological seminary. |
