Ministry Description |
Martha’s Vineyard is an expensive place to live and, like many New England and Northeast coastal communities, we are seeing a growing population of retirees, and few new families interested in regular church attendance. While employment may be a challenge, many young and middle-aged families choose to find a way to raise a family on the island they love. We are fortunate that our island community has five valued elementary schools and a charter school, as well as one regional high school that enable many of its graduates to attend Harvard and many other Ivy League institutions. In addition to a respected school system, our island hospital, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, is an affiliate of Partners HealthCare, Mass. General Hospital in Boston. Without question, our community offers year-round opportunities for personal growth through many of its cultural, civic, educational, environmental, and spiritual activities. We are truly blessed with many interested, committed parishioners who very much hope our Settled Pastor will be not only our minister, but also the church’s CEO. We also believe that our new Pastor needs to feel comfortable dealing with people ranging from hedge fund executives to the homeless, and if the senior, retired population is the only growing demographic on the island, we need to find new ways to engage them in the life of the church. Moreover, we desire a Pastor who is energetic enough to attract young families; an adept educator, inspirer and listener; someone who can concentrate on sustaining membership and expanding stewardship; a person of faith; and someone who can position us for the future. For us, stewardship is not just a matter of money, but of passing on the history and tradition that The Federated Church represents. |
